After
independence from Britain, the status of English began to be
re-defined, and from the late 1960s onwards the national
language Bahasa Malaysia replaced English as the dominant
language of government and education. McArthur
(1992) estimates that at least 20% of the population
understand English. The informal variety of Malaysian English
is known as 'Manglish'. Population: c.23 million.
