Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world with population 164,741,924 estimated in July 2007 (World Facts Index). In terms of the use of English as a second language, it secures 9th position among the countries of the world, with 17,000,000 speakers (Crystal 2005). Nearly 26 million (17.29%) of the population have passed the ten-year school system (matriculation), and can read and understand at least some English. English is the country's second official language, widely used within the government, by the civil service, the judiciary and the military. Pakistan's Constitution and laws are written in both English and Urdu. Many schools and colleges, and nearly all universities, use English as the medium of instruction.
